20 Things You Didn't Know About The Shining

7. Most Of Kubrick's Family Helped Make It

Nepotism is a cornerstone of show-business, as anyone who works at the BBC can attest to. Film is a collaborative effort, so when you direct a film, chances are good that you'll know approximately zero people working on it with you.

Unless you're Kubrick on the set of The Shining.

In the case of this film, he had half of his entire family helping him make it. For one, the executive producer of this movie was Kubrick's brother-in-law, Jan Harlan. The design and music were respectively handled by Kubrick's wife and daughter, Christine and Vivian Kubrick.

In fact, Vivian would go on to be famous for the 30 minute BBC documentary, The Making Of The Shining. Which gave audiences a rare look into the behind the scenes directing styles of the famous director.

The Shining truly was a family effort on the part of Kubrick. Without his wife and daughter to help design the look and sound of the movie, and without his brother-in-law to fund the thing to begin with, we likely wouldn't have this treasured classic. Or at the very least, not have it in the form it is now.
