20 Things You Didn't Know About Waterworld

14. The Atoll Set Cost $22 Million...But Had No Bathrooms

A sizable chunk of the movie's budget was devoted to the construction of the main atoll set upon which the majority of shooting took place.

The set weighed 1,000 tonnes, was a quarter-mile in length, had to float on an artificial water set in Hawaii, and ultimately used up all of the state's available steel, requiring more to be flown in from California.

Despite the impression that no expense was spared, nobody thought to equip the atoll set with bathrooms for the cast and crew.

Worse still, none of the nearby boats used by the cast and crew had lavatories either, requiring the production to ferry anyone who needed to relieve themselves back to portable toilets which were kept on a barge near the shore.

Considering that shooting days on a blockbuster movie are long, it was a totally ridiculous oversight.
