20 Things You Didn't Know About Your Favourite Horror Movies
10. Lucio Fulci Often Used Homeless Winos As Zombies
The Godfather of Gore, Lucio Fulci's, two most well-known cinematic endeavours - 1979's Zombi 2 (aka Zombie Flesh Eaters) and 1981's The Beyond - both have one thing in common: Zombies. One little known fact about these two films is that the director would often use the homeless as his undead extras. It's no secret that zombies films are known for their frugality and Fulci's films were no exceptions.
Indeed, quite a few of his ambling zombie-targets, and that eerie assortment of desiccated corpses lying in the wastes of The Beyond, are actually local down-and-outs and homeless people lured in with the cheap promise of a meal and a few quid to get some more booze. You look at them - they're not acting, are they? Well, whether they are or they aren’t, they certainly have the zombie stagger perfected.
Bonus fact: All the zombie extras in George Romero's Day Of The Dead received a t-shirt that said "I Played A Zombie In Day Of The Dead" and one dollar bill. Being a zombie doesn't seem to be a lucrative business, does it?
