The ending of the film features its three survivors - Jim (Cillian Murphy), Selena (Naomie Harris), and Hannah (Megan Burns) - laying low at a remote cottage. A lone jet flies over the landscape, and the infected are shown dying of starvation. The film ends with the jet flying over the three survivors, and the pilot calling in a rescue helicopter. Good for them.

Though, originally there was a rather depressing alternate ending that saw Jim die in an abandoned hospital. Selena is heartbroken, and Hannah, distraught, looks to her for guidance. Selena tells Hannah that they will go on; they pick up their guns and walk away from Jim's lifeless body. Selena and Hannah walk through the operating room doors, which gradually stop swinging.

This ending was reshot as test audiences found it to be way too downbeat - but it was attached to US prints as an Easter egg late in the run.
