11. George Romero Almost Directed Resident Evil

It's no secret that the Resident Evil game franchise was inspired by zombie maestro George Romero's Dead film(s). And because of this, the director was recruited to shoot a 30-second live action trailer for the second entry of the series.

The powers that be were so impressed, they ultimately hired Romero to direct a full blown movie. By 2000 it had entered pre-production, had a finished script and Romero and his team even had props constructed. Sounds great, right? Nope. Anything this great was bound to fall apart at the seams.

In the end, creative differences kept this project from coming to fruition. Evidently someone deemed Romero’s version less than marketable. Some say that the story was too altered from the game's original premise and that it would alienate newcomers and fans alike. Romero's script is currently available online and it's actually a fairly interesting read. Give it a once over and decide for yourself if it could have been a game-changer or if it deserved its fate.

Bonus fact: Before Milla Jovovich landed the lead role of Alice in the film, Gwyneth Paltrow almost filled the slot. Just throwing that out there.
