20 Things You Probably Didn't Know About Children Of Men

13. The Film's Religious Allusions

Children Of Men
Universal

As with its source novel, the film is rife with religious allusions and they all play a part in fleshing out the story being told. Although the film is not as focused on religion as the novel was, it still features imagery and lines of dialogue reminiscent of holy texts and other sacred media.

For starters, the title itself is mentioned several times in the Bible, most notably in Psalms 90 (“Thou turnest man to destruction; and sayest, Return ye children of men”). Furthermore, some viewers have compared Theo and Kee to Joseph and Mary as both couples traveled under duress (more so with the former pairing) to find a place suitable to give birth to a child who would save humanity.

In addition to the Bible, the Shanti mantra said by Miriam and Jasper are found in Upanishads (Hindu philosophical texts) and refer to the characters’ search for peace in a world bereft of it.
