20 Things You Probably Didn't Know About Logan

14. The Film’s Unexpected Cinematic Inspirations

Logan Jerry Seinfeld
Fox Searchlight

Logan’s narrative took inspiration from a variety of cinematic gems in a way rarely seen in the genre. Beyond the obvious choices such as Shane and Unforgiven, Logan drew inspiration from left-field choices such as Little Miss Sunshine, The Gauntlet, Paper Moon and The Wrestler.

At first glance, these stories feel far removed from Logan’s post-apocalyptic superhero story but after deeper inspection, they share a stronger thematic connection. This can be seen with its aging, past his prime protagonist (The Wrestler), and elder accompanying a gifted child on a road trip (Little Miss Sunshine) as the central character struggles with seeing the child as his daughter (Paper Moon).

While the connections between Logan and these classics is not as obvious as laid out above, the thematic parallels give the X-Men saga's genre experiment a different atmosphere compared to most efforts in the realm of capes and cowls.
