20 Things You Somehow Missed In Alfred Hitchcock Movies

3. Someone Really Is Crawling Under The Carousel - Strangers On A Train

North By Northwest
Warner Bros.

One of the most exciting scenes within Strangers on a Train is the climax on the carousel. As the fairground ride derails into an uncontrollable spin, Bruno and Guy have their final face off whilst innocent youths hold on to their life and porcelain horses look dead into the camera – a deliciously tense momnt amongst the film’s final conclusion.

To stop it, an old carnival worker slowly crawls underneath the carousel to get to the centre and apply the brakes. This stunt was not done by trick photography or deftly shot camera angles, as that man really is taking his life in his hands by moving under the fast-spinning ride.

Hitchcock claimed it was the most dangerous stunt ever performed under his direction, and he would never allow for it to be done again.
