20 Things You Somehow Missed In Alfred Hitchcock Movies

18. The Controversial Fake Flashback - Stage Fright

North By Northwest
Warner Bros.

Stage Fright is definitely not one of Hitchcock’s most memorable pictures, as it lacks the intricate cinematography and concise plot building of his other films. But to its credit, it did break a long-established cinematic convention, as it was the first movie ever to tell a 'false story'.

At the beginning of the film, Jonathon Cooper tells Eve “what happened", with the recollection finishing with a transitional dissolve. It was never made obvious that the character is lying.

Later on, it is revealed that the flashback is a false account of past events. This was controversial at the time because audiences felt cheated by the non-linear storytelling.
