20 Things You Somehow Missed In Alien

3. Jaws

Alien, both in its development stage and in reviews from critics, drew numerous comparisons to the movie Jaws. Understandable really, as both concern a rag-tag group of survivors attempting to best a terrifying creature as it slowly whittles them down one by one. One write-up just called it "Jaws in space".

However there's another, very deliberate, reference to Spielberg's notorious shark movie, as Ash (or rather, Ash's head) describes the Xenomorph as a "perfect killing machine". This was included by Ridley Scott as a nod to Jaws, where Matt Hooper calls the shark "a perfect engine, an eating machine".
