Doc reveals his time machine to Marty outside the Twin Pines Mall. After Doc is gunned down by terrorists, Marty uses the DeLorean to escape the criminals and accidentally goes back in time. As he prepares to return to the timeline, he decides to return a couple of minutes earlier so he can stop Doc from suffering his grisly fate.

As Marty runs towards his friend, he dashes by a sign which reads "Lone Pine Mall". When Marty passed this area in the beginning of the film when he first saw the DeLorean, the sign read, "Twin Pines Mall". Why is it Lone Pine now instead of Twin Pines?

After a bit of thinking, you should remember that when Marty drove out of the farm in 1955, he crashed through one of two trees. After he does this, the farmer screams "MY PINE!" Obviously, this scene shows the mall was named after the farmer's pine trees. This change in the time-stream is just another example of what Doc says; the smallest alterations in the past can cause changes in the future that you can never imagine.
