Way back when, it was Natasha Romanoff who first told Steve Rogers about the existence of the Winter Soldier. At that time no one thought he was real, and Steve certainly had no reason to believe that he was his old pal Bucky, but the scar he gave Black Widow was proof enough that he existed.

Nat and Bucky had tangled previously, though this is a story that will seemingly never be explored by the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This is such a shame, as this arguably would have made for a better Black Widow story than the events between the wars both Civil and Infinity.

In the comics, the two assassins have had a very long, chequered, and romantic past, with Bucky even training Natasha in the Red Room at one stage. Fans will never quite know exactly what happened between them in the MCU, but there was at least a little hint that there was something there in Civil War.

After Zemo unlocked Bucky’s mind and turned him into the Winter Soldier again, he fought the likes of Tony Stark, Sharon Carter, T’Challa, and Natasha. She told him that he could at least have recognised her, indicating that there was something significant between the two of them, whether it stopped at a bullet wound or went a little further.
