20 Things You Somehow Missed In Collateral
19. Collateral Features Several Callbacks To Heat
It is fitting that Michael Mann's 2004 opus pays homage to the classic that is Heat. The 1995 crime classic and the 21st-century picture have a fair amount of thematic connections and are deeply focused on men at the top of their game in the criminal world meeting - and ultimately falling - to their foils.
However, these ties go beyond these elements. For starters, Vincent's attire is a direct match for Neil McCauley's (Robert De Niro) outfit in Heat, and both stories share a shot of an incoming train (though Collateral uses it as its closing shot rather than its opening).
Additionally, the line "get clean shots, watch your background" appears just before each movie's most prominent action setpieces, though it is not as clearly stated in Collateral as it is in Heat.
