Michael Mann's action-heavy films are renowned for their intense and realistic gunfights, and a part of why this case is due to the actors' rigorous training. Before shooting starts, the actors on set train extensively to effortlessly sell their characters' skill with firearms.

Tom Cruise, Jamie Foxx, Mark Ruffalo and Javier Bardem put in significant effort to bring their characters to life. During the promotion of the movie's home release, Mann told CNN that Foxx received extensive driving training to sell his role as a cab driver.

Unsurprisingly, Cruise underwent rigorous training to convincingly convey Vincent's hand-to-hand combat abilities and marksmanship. While talking to Deadline (as part of a celebration of Cruise's career in the lead-up to Top Gun: Maverick), Mann praised the action star's dedication to his role, specifically his discipline while learning how to use the weapons on set.
