Due to a combination of the groundbreaking digital cinematography, distinct settings and colourful, morally murky characters, Los Angeles in Collateral feels as much as a character as Vincent or Max. That is why it is surprising that the story was initially set in New York before Michael Mann took on directorial duties.

During a press conference with Blackfilm.com, Mann stated that he wanted to set his thriller in Los Angeles to avoid the logistical hurdles faced by film crews while in shooting in different cities such as Toronto and Vancouver.

Additionally, an Observer essay revealed that the director's production notes indicated that he wanted to show a different side of the city beyond the norm typically depicted in most forms of media.
