20 Things You Somehow Missed In Collateral
14. Collateral Was Shot On Both Film And Digital
A good chunk of Michael Mann's filmography is defined by the pioneering use of digital cinematography. Admittedly, some of his movies do not employ digital cameras as sleekly as others, but fortunately Collateral succeeds where the likes of Blackhat did not.
That said, the 2004 picture was not solely shot using more contemporary filming technology. The club setpiece was shot on film due to the medium working best in sequences with intense lighting.
The opposite was true for the many nighttime scenes. As noted in a Premium Beat retrospective essay on Mann's filmography and filmmaking style, the filmmaker realised that shooting on film would not capture key moments due to the limited lighting, and as a result digital photography proved to be more effective in scenes set during the dead of night.
