20 Things You Somehow Missed In Collateral
13. Conflicting Views On Set Led To Unexpected Innovations In Cinematography
Collateral is credited as having two cinematographers, Dion Beebe and Paul Cameron. Beebe was involved throughout most of the picture's production after he took over from Cameron, who had various grievances with the digital cameras on set. Said issues led to him leaving the project three weeks into production.
While talking about his work on the film to the American Cinematographer magazine, Cameron realised that the camera setup was not particularly efficient and the lensing as well as the colour bandwidth did not meet the standards for a film production.
Panavision (the company behind the cameras) took these notes to heart and used them to develop a new Panavision Genesis camera model that was first used on 2006's Superman Returns (as highlighted by MovieWeb).
