At the outset of the film, the Yuletide spirit is getting underway at Nakatomi's corporate Christmas party.
Joseph Yoshinobu Takagi addresses his colleagues at the party and informs them of what a successful year the company has had.
The shot then focuses on the crowd on the 30th floor atrium and, even though the sound effects portray Takagi's colleagues as being celebratory and overjoyed, the office workers that the audience sees are nothing of the sort. In fact, they seem to be behaving very soberly at an office party (all except for Hart Bochner's Harry Ellis, of course, who is looking for his next fix of cocaine).
