20 Things You Somehow Missed In Friday The 13th (1980)

15. Kill Her Mommy!

Friday the 13th was, like many other slasher films of the era, riding the wave of success created by Halloween. Even though screenwriter, Victor Miller accepted that this was the case in later years, he also admitted that he had inverted the resolution to Psycho when writing Friday the 13th.

In Psycho, Anthony Perkins's Norman Bates believes that his mother is still alive, dressing up as her and speaking in her voice (essentially giving her half of his existence and half of his mind) to achieve that effect, even killing those who are either getting too close to learning the truth or whom Norman is getting close to.

Miller wrote Friday the 13th so that, even though Mrs Voorhees knows that Ari Lehman's Jason is dead, she perpetuates his memory by attacking the summer camp whenever it looks like it might reopen.

Not unlike Norman Bates, she even talks to herself in Jason's voice, goading herself into killing her victims when it appears that they might escape. However, she does not revert into being him at the end of the film.

Contributor

I started writing for WhatCulture in July 2020. I have always enjoyed reading and writing. I have contributed to several short story competitions and I have occasionally been fortunate enough to have my work published. During the COVID-19 lockdown, I also started reviewing films on my Facebook page. Numerous friends and contacts suggested that I should start my own website for reviewing films, but I wanted something a bit more diverse - and so here I am! My interests focus on film and television mainly, but I also occasionally produce articles that venture into other areas as well. In particular, I am a fan of the under appreciated sequel (of which there are many), but I also like the classics and the mainstream too.
