One of the many things that made Ghostbusters iconic was a lot of its design work. Taking the simple and mundane and kit-bashing things into ghostbusting equipment is part of the film's charm. Forget the proton packs for just a second, even the Ghostbusters uniform is just cheap khaki coveralls. The 'Busters really are more like paranormal janitors more than superheroes.

Whilst it's easy to cover your made-up tech in bits and pieces to make them look complicated but serve no purpose, that tube attached to the Ghostbusters' outfit does actually have a reason. It's connected to the 'Busters underwear, just in case a spectre is too spooky and they accidentally pee their pants.
