During the fight with legendary gladiator Tigris of Gaul (and the accompanying tigers that Commodus adds for fun,) Russell Crowe has to perform a fall and roll away from his foe. During that fall, the black spandex shorts Crow wore under his gladiator garb were clearly visible.

Gladiators did indeed wear underwear beneath their fighting armour, called subligar. It certainly would not have been as snug and comfortable (and eye-shielding) as black spandex; these shorts prevented Crowe from having what would no doubt have been a very breezy, not to mention embarassing, moment in front of the thousands of extras watching the filming.
