Gravity's $100 million budget is somewhat tame compared to the outrageous spending found in most blockbusters these days, and it can easily be argued that it has more bang for its buck than its costlier counterparts.

This is why it was surprising yet impressive to hear that India's Mars Orbiter Mission (dubbed Mangalyaan, or Mars Craft) cost less than the Hollywood feature, and was a whopping nine times cheaper than NASA's Maven mission to the Red Planet.

The reasons behind this boil down to relatively cheaper labour and a less complex mission - Mangalyaan was only designed to reach Mars, not study it - meaning there was less need for extensive equipment to be onboard the mission.
