20 Things You Somehow Missed In Inglourious Basterds

Here's something you've probably never noticed consciously, but there's a good chance your brain did.

Tarantino's film of course features a significant amount of non-English dialogue, requiring the regular appearance of subtitles. That's all well and good, yet the manner in which subtitles are used throughout the movie is wildly inconsistently.

For starters, in the opening farm scene when Landa speaks French to LaPadite, the subtitles will decide on a whim whether or not to directly translate conversational words and phrases.

For example, when Landa thanks one of LaPadite's daughters for bringing him milk, "Merci" is simply translated as "Merci," but when Landa praises LaPadite for his milk and family, LaPadite's "Merci" is translated as "Thank you."

Landa saying "Oui" also isn't translated to "Yes" on numerous occasions, and there doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason to it.

It's been suggested that Tarantino included these "mistakes" as an homage to the rough-around-the-edges spaghetti westerns which inspired both this movie and much of his late-period career.
