6. The GoGo Yubari Battle Royale Reference
O-Ren's schoolgirl bodyguard GoGo Yubari is played by Chiaki Kuriyama, an actress who won the role after Tarantino saw her in the hit Japanese film Battle Royale.
Tarantino, who in 2009 called Battle Royale his favourite film of the prior 20 years, brought Kuriyama aboard to portray GoGo, and also ensured to include a thinly veiled reference to Battle Royale in the process.
During GoGo's introductory scene, she toys with a drunk Japanese man who is hitting on her, ultimately impaling him with her sword and making a joke about her being the one who has penetrated him.
This is clearly a nod to Kuriyama's Battle Royale role, where as Chigusa - also a school girl - she fends off a horny classmate by stabbing him to death with a knife.
