20 Things You Somehow Missed In Layer Cake

17. The Ending Is A Director's Cut, Not Sony's Preferred Alternate Version

Layer Cake Daniel Craig
Sony Pictures Classics

Signing off with one of the most impactful and jaw-dropping climaxes of its time, the sight of Craig's XXXX being gunned down Duke's jittery nephew Sidney - played by eventual 007 Q Ben Wishaw - left many an audience member needing a slightly less bloody lie down.

However, a great many of those taking in these shocking final moments were likely unaware of the fact they were actually witnessing a conclusion not initially approved by the film's distributors Sony Pictures. Upon being told by the studio to go with a much more upbeat ending that had XXXX driving off into the sunset with Tammy, though, Vaughn opted to take matters into his own hands and filmed his preferred ending that he'd later screen to a test audience.

With those folks lapping up the carnage, Vaughn decided to finally go with a finale that "was not like other American movie endings."

You can say that again.
