20 Things You Somehow Missed In Never Say Never Again

1. Luton Hoo As Shrublands

Both in Thunderball and in Never Say Never Again, Bond suffers an injury in the course of duty, which leads to him being sent to Shrublands Health Spa.

Whilst Chalfont House near Gerrards Cross in Buckinghamshire represented the exclusive clinic in the 1965 film, here it is represented by Luton Hoo, an English country estate in Bedfordshire. However, the interior, including the fight sequence between Sean Connery and Pat Roach (of Indiana Jones fame) was filmed in the aptly named Shrubland Hall in Suffolk.

Luton Hoo has featured in numerous films both prior to and since Never Say Never Again, including 1964's A Shot in the Dark; 1994's Four Weddings and a Funeral, and Stanley Kubrick's 1999 film, Eyes Wide Shut. Also in 1999, the interior of the manor house (which is now a hotel) served as Elektra King's villa in Baku, Azerbaijan in the 19th official James Bond film, The World Is Not Enough.

Once again, Connery had outdone his successors by getting there first.

Contributor

I started writing for WhatCulture in July 2020. I have always enjoyed reading and writing. I have contributed to several short story competitions and I have occasionally been fortunate enough to have my work published. During the COVID-19 lockdown, I also started reviewing films on my Facebook page. Numerous friends and contacts suggested that I should start my own website for reviewing films, but I wanted something a bit more diverse - and so here I am! My interests focus on film and television mainly, but I also occasionally produce articles that venture into other areas as well. In particular, I am a fan of the under appreciated sequel (of which there are many), but I also like the classics and the mainstream too.
