20 Things You Somehow Missed In Shutter Island

14. The "Invisible" Water Cup

Shutter Island
Paramount Pictures

Literally seconds after this, Kearns asks Chuck to get her a cup of water while she writes a note to Teddy.

Chuck returns and passes Kearns the cup of water, yet as she drinks it, eagle-eyed viewers might notice that her hand is actually empty, before the cup is visible again in the next shot as she puts it down - albeit with the other hand.

Though some were silly enough to pawn this all off as some sort of technical or editing error, it was clearly an intentional flourish on the part of Scorsese and his legendary long-time editor Thelma Schoonmaker.

The entire film is packed with visual oddities intended to throw the audience off and keep them constantly feeling like something subtly isn't right, and this is surely one of the very best.
