For the most part, it's usually safe to assume that if a year is boasting a brand new release from one of the biggest and most loved franchises ever to be unleashed on a movie theatre, said 12-month-period won't likely see any other flick surpass its overall box office haul.

And while that was still clearly the case domestically when it came to Revenge of the Sith's 2005 release, beating out the competition stateside with a taking of $380 million, the same could not be said for its worldwide release.

None other than those bumbling wizards and witches over in J.K. Rowling's Wizarding World were actually able to capture more attention and dollars than George Lucas' last Prequel outing, with Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire beating out Episode III's $868 million splash with a staggering $895 million made at the worldwide box office.

Either way, 2005 definitely marked the year of The Dark Lords...
