As revealed by Rian Johnson during that aforementioned director's commentary (via Decider), Dern simply could not help herself in the moment and repeatedly unleashed a few "pew pew!" noises when pulling the trigger on her blaster, with one even making it into the film during that shoot-out.
What's the point of being in a Star Wars flick if you can't let out the odd "swoosh!" and "pew!", eh?
