20 Things You Somehow Missed In The Big Lebowski
3. Some Timeline Trip-Ups
While the film is set sometime between late 1990 and early '91, it was shot in early '97. For this reason, there are all sorts of products and songs included in the film that would not have existed at the time. Look for things like calendars on the wall, songs playing through the Dude's headphones, and labels on sodas and groceries that didn't debut until later in the decade.
The grocery store scenes are especially guilty of inconsistencies like these. One of the most glaring instances is the inclusion of a Smart Balance soup can, which didn't even debut until 1995. (Plus, there's also the fact that California didn't require sex offenders to go door-to-door until 1996 — still, the dastardly rival bowler Jesus insists he has to do this.)
