As already noted, animatronics were very much at the core of raising the dino bar when it came time to step back into this Jurassic landscape.

Instead of facing the sort of frustrating issues that arose with an unpredictable Tyrannosaurus puppet during their previous dino romp, though, it appears the crew behind the flick were free to really put their robotic monsters through the wringer this time around.

As noted by special effects creator Shane Mahan when working on The Lost World, much of the destruction on show when the two gigantic Rex's bash the hell out of an RV was about as real as it gets thanks to the crew's growing confidence in the robustness of their creations.

In Mahan's words:

"...we had the most fun smashing up the RV with the two T-rexes. At first, we were hesitant, thinking that we had to be careful with the rigs. But it got to the point where we were just, 'Ah, to hell with it,' and we just demolished that trailer with the T-rex rigs. That scene wasn't faked. Those T-rexes were really slamming into that thing, breaking glass and shaking it. I think the scene really works because we went for it like that. You can tell that something truly violent is happening."

And said freedom ultimately led to one of the most pulsating set pieces in the franchise's history. So, well played, folks.
