When Truman and Meryl visit Truman's "mother," Angela (Holland Taylor), they look through an old photo album containing pictures of Truman as a child.

Angela eventually stops on a page with a picture of a young Truman wearing a clown costume while staring at the camera from behind a childproof gate, with the handwritten caption, "My little clown!"

While on first glance this might seem like nothing more than an adorable picture taken by a loving parent, it actually symbolises exactly what Truman is: a prisoner albeit an unknowing one, and a clown whose entire life is a cruel, unwitting piece of performance to entertain the masses.
