20 Things You Somehow Missed In The Truman Show
15. Marlon Re-Stocks The Vending Machine On A Loop
Most of the show's actors are simply carrying out a superficial performance of whatever their chosen "job" is, as is made evident when the bus driver deliberately damages the bus' transmission so he doesn't have to actually drive Truman to freedom.
This is indicated in altogether subtler fashion in the movie's first act when Truman visits Marlon at work while he's stocking a convenience store vending machine.
Marlon - or rather, Louis - wasn't actually expecting Truman to show up, and so didn't have enough candy bars on hand to keep convincingly stocking the machine for the entire "scene."
As a result, he simply removes a few candy bars from the machine every time Truman turns away from him during their conversation, allowing him to put them back in the machine without Truman noticing that something's amiss.
Obviously a real employee would have boxes full of the bars, but given that nobody actually uses the vending machines in Seahaven due to the show having a proper catering department, there's no need to actually keep it fully stocked. Boom.
If Truman had been a little more attentive, he might've caught on sooner that something wasn't quite right.
