20 Times Directors You Trust Totally Let You Down
9. M Night Shyamalan - The Village
The Director:
Yes, M Night Shyamalan is a good director to some extent. Back in 2004 he was really on a roll, and had made three strong films in a row.
The Film:
Back when he was popular, Shyamalan's biggest weakness was always the thing everyone remembered him for: the plot twist. In all three of his previous films, the twist was the worst part. With The Village, Shyamalan totally lost the plot and made up a twist even dumber than the ending of Signs.
No spoilers here, but the twist is exceptionally stupid and doesn't make the slightest bit of sense. Looking on the bright side, it won't spoil the film for most since it's highly unlikely anyone was enjoying it to begin with.
In Shyamalan's first bad movie, he really flopped with the writing. The film completely lacks the character and dramatic depth of his earlier work, while most of the talented cast spends the movie doing their best Bella Swan impersonations. He hadn't quite lost his knack for strong cinematography yet, but ultimately The Village fails to be scary.
Has He Bounced Back?
For a long time, not in the slightest. Lady in the Water, The Happening, The Last Airbender and After Earth were all disastrous, but The Visit and Split were both returns to form at last. Good for him.
