20 Times Directors You Trust Totally Let You Down

15. John Lasseter - Cars 2

The Director:

John Lasseter IS Pixar.

He's only actually directed five films - Toy Story, Toy Story 2, A Bug's Life, Cars and this - but he's always been a creative consultant and producer on all their films, and is arguably the biggest figure in American animation.

The Film:

John Lasseter directed Pixar's first bad film. Who saw that coming?

Further indulging his lifelong obsession with cars - and the financial reward of having masses of toys sold - John Lasseter's Cars 2 is a visually stunning (Well, duh!) and occasionally fun adventure, but it was the film that began Pixar's semi-decline in the 2010s.

It will have sold plenty of toys, and looking at the movie, you start to wonder if you're actually watching a feature-length toy commercial instead of a film. Given that it lacks plot, intelligence and is a phoned-in work from the most beloved animation studio in the world, that feels likely.

This just felt like some generic children's action film, instead of the films for all ages Pixar usually makes, so the appeal to anyone above the age of 12 will be pretty low.

Has He Bounced Back?

He hasn't directed since and Lasseter is currently caught up in a sexual harassment scandal and is taking a 6 month leave of absence from Pixar. That's a childhood-ruining scandal if there ever was one.
