Not the financial disaster many people believe it to be, Waterworld actually managed to turn a profit when you factor in home video sales, merchandising sales and theme park endorsements. Another misconception about the infamously troubled $175m production is that it is a terrible movie, and this just simply isn't true.
An ambitious epic that aimed for greatness and missed, Kevin Reynolds' (or Costner, depending on how much of the behind-the-scenes gossip you believe) post-apocalyptic blockbuster boasts some great narrative ideas that quite don't come off, but the breathtaking practical sets and effects give it a defiantly old-school feel, perfect for a lazy Saturday afternoon.
The Director's Cut is even better, and manages to fill in many of the gaps created by the theatrical version's overzealous edit.
