20 Underrated Movies You Have To See
8. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
Most people only see Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark/Iron Man these days, but rest assured he is a much more capable and criminally under-seen actor outside of the MCU. Aside from picking up Academy Award nominations for Chaplin (which almost made this very list) and Tropic Thunder, RDJ also stole the show in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, a seriously dark and intelligent comedy released in 2005.
Directed by Predator actor and Lethal Weapon writer Shane Black, the crime comedy sees a thief called Harry Lockhart (Downey) pretending to be an actor and befriending a private eye called Perry (Val Kilmer). After a series of bizarre and increasingly hilarious confrontations, the odd couple find themselves covering up a murder and investigating those responsible for the crime.
It's fast paced and incredibly funny (at one point Lockhart loses a finger, and it's hysterical), anchored by the easy chemistry of Downey Jr and Kilmer and helped by a fun supporting role in Michelle Monaghan. Add to the great performances some solid hyper direction from Black, and what you've got is dark comedy at its finest and most overlooked. Well worth a watch.
