20 Upcoming Movies That Might Be Surprisingly Good
6. Toy Story 5
It's fair to say that many groaned when Disney confirmed that Toy Story 5 was in the works, because not only did the beloved animated franchise "conclude" with the brilliantly affecting Toy Story 3, it served up a pretty good - if wildly unnecessary - epilogue in Toy Story 4.
A fifth film seems hard to justify on a narrative level considering how thoroughly tied-off Woody (Tom Hanks) and Buzz's (Tim Allen) stories appear to be, and so many immediately dismissed the sequel as little more than a craven cash-grab.
While seeing the toys face off against a computer tablet (Greta Lee) doesn't seem like a particularly inspired or current premise on paper, Pixar should probably get the benefit of the doubt given that Toy Story 5 is being written and directed by the great Andrew Stanton.
Stanton previously wrote and directed two of the studio's most beloved films to date - Finding Nemo and WALL-E - and also pulled off a solid sequel in Finding Dory.
That, combined with the Toy Story series' four-for-four batting average so far, means there's a good chance this is far more than the cynical brand extension exercise it appears to be on paper.
