A murder-mystery film revolving around a flock of sheep investigating the suspicious death of their shepherd - a "ewe-dunnit," even - is one of those concepts that's either going to be an absolute banger or fail completely, no in-betweens.

And even accepting that The Sheep Detectives is based on an acclaimed book by Leonie Swann, it's also one hell of a tricky concept to adapt into a successful live-action feature.

All the more so when this film is being directed by Kyle Balda (The Lorax, Minions, Despicable Me 3), who has never helmed a live-action film before.

But beyond the stupendously good cast - including Hugh Jackman, Hong Chau, Emma Thompson, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Chris O'Dowd, Regina Hall, Patrick Stewart, Bella Ramsey, and Brett Goldstein - it's being written by Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin.

Though Mazin has worked in the comedy realm before, having written and directed 2008's widely panned Superhero Movie, it goes without saying that he's grown tremendously as a creative over the years, and to see him returning to comedy after working on Chernobyl and The Last of Us is nothing if not hugely intriguing.

He's such a left-field pick to write something like this that it just might work.
