20 Upcoming Movies That Might Be Surprisingly Good
13. The Cat in the Hat
Even though 2003's infamous Mike Myers-starring live-action adaptation of Dr. Seuss' The Cat in the Hat was a massive box office flop, it was only a matter of time before Hollywood tried again.
As beloved as the source material is, there's simply not a whole ton of folk clamouring for a new adaptation of The Cat in the Hat, and so the instant, knee-jerk reaction here was to roll one's eyes.
But we probably shouldn't be quite so hasty given that this new animated take is being co-written and directed by Alessandro Carloni and Erica Rivinoja - Carloni having previously co-directed Kung Fu Panda 3 and Rivinoja being an Oscar-nominated screenwriter on Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.
Then there's the inspired choice to cast the great Bill Hader as the Cat, while the stacked ensemble includes Xochitl Gomez, Matt Berry, Quinta Brunson, Giancarlo Esposito, America Ferrera, Bowen Yang, and Tituss Burgess.
On top of this, the first trailer actually looks pretty solid - the aesthetic feels distinctly Seussian while avoiding the obvious temptation to just copy the now-overused style of the Spider-Verse animated movies.
