20 Utterly Devastating Movie Endings No One Saw Coming
4. The Green Mile
Here we are back with another Stephen King adaptation, as it would seem that the man knows how to create utterly devastating endings that no one saw coming. In this case, it is The Green Mile, and more specifically, the fate of John Coffey.
The Green Mile is one of the most universally beloved films of all time, and there are no bigger contributors to that response than Michael Clarke Duncan's John Coffey. The gentle giant was truly a beautiful character, and his story was nothing short of heartbreaking.
Initially accused of murdering two girls, whose bodies he had been found cradling while whispering that he was sorry, John's true miraculous gift of healing was ultimately revealed. He didn't kill those girls; he was trying to heal them and was sorry because he couldn't.
Throughout the entire story, as John's gifts were proven almost one by one to the other characters, audiences would be forgiven for thinking that there would be a happy ending where he saw justice. John, however, asked for his death penalty not to be reversed, as he was tired of so much ugliness in the world. A more starkly thought-provoking and bitter ending you will struggle to find.
