20 Utterly Devastating Movie Endings No One Saw Coming
3. Logan
By the time of 2017, it wouldn't be unfair to say that the X-Men franchise was well past its peak. In fact, leaving it there and not going into a tirade about what the series became is pretty damn generous. However, then came the masterpiece that is Logan.
Hugh Jackman had appeared in every single X-Men film up to this point, including cameos in First Class, Apocalypse, and of course Deadpool as a cut-out from a magazine, and while he was essentially wheeled out for a painfully gratuitous cameo for the sake of it in Apocalypse, the ending of his own trilogy was highly anticipated.
X-Men Origins and The Wolverine were both underwhelming efforts for a character such as Wolverine, but from the first trailer, it was clear that Logan would be different, and as a finale, it was simply outstanding.
You may have had an inkling that Wolvie's days were numbered, hell that is what the movie was saying the entire time, but for him to die in such circumstances, as a true hero to the kids at Eden, and as a father to Laura (Dafne Keen), in such a heartbreaking way, avenging the gut-wrenching death of Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart), was truly exceptional. Nothing that happened in the previous two solo Wolverine films could have led audiences to believe that there was anything quite like this left in the tank.
