On the whole, the James Bond franchise has never been known for its moments of sadness or poignancy. Certainly, there have been occasions where emotion has been coaxed out of the audience, the deaths of M and Bond himself in Skyfall and No Time to Die, respectively, but there are not too many over the 60+ years of the series.

One such needle-in-the-haystack moment, and certainly the most shocking, came at the end of On Her Majesty's Secret Service. George Lazenby's only appearance as Bond saw 007 get hitched before the credits rolled, something else that wasn't often seen.

James has always typically been something of a womaniser, almost to the point of being problematic, and though you could argue that his marriage to Tracy (Diana Rigg) was surprising enough as an ending, it got much worse.

Tracy was ultimately shot and killed in a brutal drive-by at the hands of Blofeld (Telly Savalas). Bond survived, but his new bride, still in her wedding dress, did not. This led into the story of the next outing two years later, Diamonds Are Forever, though the fact that Bond reverted to Sean Connery for his hunt for vengeance took nothing away from such a shocking end.
