One problem surrounding becoming attached to movie characters is that, as this list will prove, they can be taken away from you at any moment. The more connected you are, the harder it's going to hit, and thus a greater emotional response.

What The Sixth Sense did in 1999 was something even greater than this, however. It is, of course, one of the biggest, if not the single biggest twist in cinematic history, but before it became so famous, it was completely unexpected and out of the blue.

Bruce Willis' Malcolm Crowe had been working as a psychiatrist for young Cole Sear (Haley Joel Osment) throughout the story, and Malcolm's relationship with his wife had become strained since he was shot by a home invader and former patient at the very beginning. The end revealed the truth, though, that the gunshot wound Malcolm had sustained was fatal, and that he had been dead the entire time.

Not only had something like this never been done before, killing a character off and not telling the audience, but this was M. Night Shyamalan's first big break into the mainstream. Even the casual movie-goer will know to expect something unexpected from the director these days, but this was as surprising as it could have possibly been.
