20 War Movies EVERY Film Fan Should Have Seen

16. Buffalo Soldiers

The Bridge on the River Kwai
Miramax

A darker slice of satirical wartime comedy than most of the flicks on this list, Buffalo Soldiers was met with critical frostiness when it debuted in 2001.

This wasn't too surprising, since the immediate aftermath of 9/11 wasn't an ideal time for a black comedy about amoral American soldiers using international warfare as an excuse to profiteer and plunder.

But this brutal, anarchic war flick from future The Informers helmer/ unluckiest man in cinema Gregor Jordan is far better than its muted reception would have you believe, thanks in large part to a superb early performance from a young Joaquin Phoenix whose charm grounds the "Animal House by way of Platoon" proceedings.
