All Quiet On The Western Front
Universal

If the far later Jarhead imagined contemporary warfare as a faraway series of missile landings from which troops are all but removed, the early war film All Quiet on the Western Front made the up close and personal atrocities of trench warfare clear in no uncertain terms.

Created after the first world war and documenting the misfortunes of a doomed band of German soldiers, this grim film offers no easy answers and was critically acclaimed for its realistically devastating portrait of war.

Acclaimed, that is, outside of Nazi Germany, where it was banned for... Well, realistically depicting the savagery and brutal human cost of war.
