20 Worst Best Picture Film Nominees Since 2010

19. Green Book

Bohemian Rhapsody
Universal

By many clear miles, Green Book is the weakest Best Picture winner of the 2010s; it's likely that, when Julia Roberts read this out at the ceremony, people were hoping it was a troll.

Let's get this out of the way immediately: Green Book is not a bad movie at all. In fact, it's really rather good; it's a heart-warming, beautifully-acted tale of friendship that has some really effective moments, so as a friendship drama it works.

The trouble is, as a piece of social commentary the movie is terrible and it's not exactly surprising that Green Book attracted so much criticism for this. The handling of race is incredibly clumsy and shallow and there are quite a few moments throughout that'll have everyone rolling their eyes.

The two worst examples are firstly, Tony (Viggo Mortensen) telling Don (Mahershala Ali) that he's "blacker" than him because he eats fried chicken and listens to Little Richard and secondly, that bizarre moment when Don is caught in a homosexual encounter and then this is literally never mentioned again.

Yes, those really are moments from a Best Picture winner.

As well as this, even considering the film's many strengths, it's decent at best on a technical level and it's also often predictable and safe, so it wasn't even the thirtieth best film of 2018.
