17. The Team's Totally Forced Coming Together Moment - Birds Of Prey
Birds of Prey is a flawed but fascinating, superbly acted and visually masterful superhero movie with a refreshingly adult, unhinged vibe. It doesn't have much in the way of bad scenes, but this third-act moment, in which the five main characters team up against Roman Sionis (Ewan McGregor), the main villain, feels like a missed opportunity.
In a team-based superhero film, the moment where the different heroes come together as one is very important and not getting it right can undermine the entire story. Birds of Prey didn't quite pull if off.
The five women - Harley Quinn, Cassandra, Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) and Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez) - are excellent, beautifully played characters on their own but as a team they don't have chemistry (at least, not right now), and their team-up moment feels underwhelming.
As well as this, they're apart for most of the film and all five of them only meet in this scene, so this just didn't quite work overall. Despite the strength of many of Birds of Prey's elements, this moment typifies its weaknesses.
