19. The Lazarus Effect

Rotten Tomatoes: 14% All film fans should want everything Mark Duplass touches to be wonderful, and the premise of a medical researcher who discovers a cure for death and is forced to use it on his own wife could have suit him perfectly. But that would have relied on a smarter script and more of an indie feel than The Lazarus Effect. Instead of that promising sounding remake of Pet Sematary mixed with age old Frankenstein ideas of the morality of rebirth, we got a lazy rehash that horribly lacked soul. Ironic that, isn't it? Unfortunately the potential creepy factor was entirely mishandled, so the result is neither scary in the short or the long term, and it even sinks a little when you turn your brain off and try and enjoy the thrills on a more superficial level. Sadly, there's so much hokey sciensplaining (a running theme this year) that that sort of approach is almost provocatively shunned. There's a good cast here, but the execution was so poor that even at less than 90 minutes it still feels to long.
