20 Worst Movies Of 2016
7. Dirty Grandpa
Robert De Niro is an Oscar winning actor who has been a tour de force over his career, offering the kind of intense performances over a broad spectrum of roles that could and should be used as a foundation course for acting schools the world over. Unfortunately, he also thinks he's funny, and since Meet The Parents made a load of money and inspired two sequels, he's had his opinion validated by cinematic audiences.
The result in the long term has led to films like this - a culture clash, outrageous old person movie with a grubby, Jackass-generation commitment to crude jokes and gross-out sex gags that simply aren't funny unless you get your kicks solely from watching old people do things young people usually do.
Why DeNiro feels he needs to make these fast food movies when he's still making things like Silver Linings Playbook, Joy and The Comedian is as baffling as it is devastating. It's not like the material is actually any good: the jokes are pretty mean-spirited, it's dishonest, and it's not funny at all. It's almost like he's a set of DeNiro twins - one method acting God, the other a Randy Quaid wannabe.
And it made so much money that a sequel is probably inevtiable. Great.
